In 1964, Charles Dutoit conducted Falla’s “The Three-Cornered-Hat” at the Vienna Opera with Leonid Massine’s choreography and the original decors and costumes by Picasso. He returned soon after to conduct Tchaikowsky’s famous ballet “The Swan Lake” – Rudolf Nureyev’s first ever choreography – with Nureyev performing alongside Margot Fonteyn. Charles Dutoit also had the opportunity to work with George Balanchine on his Ballet “The Four Temperaments” – inspired by the music of Hindemith – and with other choreographers on works by Varèse, Prokofiev and Stravinsky

In June 1983, Charles Dutoit made his debut at the London Royal Opera House Covent Garden performing Gounod’s Faust; 1987, at the MET in New York with Offenbach’s Les Contes d’Hoffman; 1988, at Opéra Garnier with Berlioz “The Damnation of Faust” and in 1991, at the Los Angeles Opera with Berlioz “Les Troyens”. Holding 4 concurrent positions in Montreal, Paris, Tokyo and Philadelphia, he devoted little time to opera activities. Nonetheless, he conducted some 35 operas – either in theatrical productions or in concert versions at the Vienna Staatsoper, Berlin Deutsche Oper, Opera di Roma, Buenos Aires Teatro Colón as well as the Grand Théâtre de Genève and the Opéra de Montréal.
